Your business 'About' page is doing nothing. Here is the template that actually converts

Most Malaysian SME "About Us" pages read like an entry in a 1995 corporate directory. Founded in [year]. Committed to excellence. Serving customers across [region]. Comprised of a dedicated team of professionals.

Nobody finishes reading. The bounce rate on the average About page is 78%, second only to error pages.

There is a structure that actually converts — that takes the About page from a vanity destination to one of the highest-trust-building pages on your site. I have used this on 30+ Malaysian SME sites with consistent results. Let me walk through it, with three concrete examples at the end.

What the About page is actually for

In the buyer's journey, the About page is visited after the visitor has decided they are interested in what you do, and before they decide to contact you. Its job is to close the trust gap — to convert "this looks legit" to "I'll call them today."

It is NOT for:

  • Telling the founder's career history
  • Listing every team member with a bio
  • Restating your services (the homepage does this)
  • Sharing your mission statement / vision / values triangle

It IS for:

  • Establishing why you specifically — what makes you the obvious choice vs the alternatives
  • Building human trust — putting faces and names to the business
  • Providing the proof points (certifications, scale, longevity) that the visitor needs to act

The five-section template

Section 1: The opening hook (1 paragraph)

State the core promise of your business in one sentence, then give the specific reason a visitor should care. Not your tagline — a real positioning statement.

Weak: "About Studio Verde — We are a Klang Valley-based interior design firm committed to excellence."

Strong: "Studio Verde designs and builds residential renovations between RM 80,000 and RM 400,000 for KL professionals who want a single, accountable partner — lead-architect on every project, no sub-contracting hand-offs, 6-month average timeline. We have completed 47 renovations since 2019."

The strong version:

  • States the price range upfront (qualifies in/out)
  • Names the specific customer ("KL professionals")
  • States the differentiator ("lead-architect on every project, no sub-contracting")
  • Provides scale proof ("47 renovations since 2019")

This single paragraph carries more weight than the entire rest of the page.

Section 2: Founder/team — humanise the business (2-3 paragraphs)

The About page is where you put a face to the business. The format:

  • Photo — real, not stock, ideally a professional headshot but a high-quality phone photo beats a missing photo.
  • Name and role — full name, specific role.
  • One paragraph on background — credentials, prior experience, why they started this business.
  • One paragraph on philosophy — what this person believes about how the work should be done, in their voice.

Avoid:

  • Chronological career history ("Mr Tan started at PwC in 1997...")
  • Every team member's bio (link to a separate team page if needed)
  • Stock photo or no photo (catastrophic in trust terms)

The right length is enough to make the person feel real, not enough to test the reader's patience.

Section 3: The differentiator section (3-5 specific points)

This is the conversion-critical section. NOT bullet points like "Quality. Reliability. Customer Service." Those are not differentiators — they are table stakes.

Real differentiators sound like:

  • "We file customs declarations within 2-4 hours of receiving documents — most freight forwarders take 24-48 hours."
  • "Every renovation has the lead architect on site weekly. You will never have a junior designer making decisions about your home."
  • "We publish our prices. Other accounting firms quote case-by-case; we tell you in our pricing page exactly what an SME engagement costs."

Each point should be:

  • Specific — measurable or verifiable.
  • Compared — explicit or implicit comparison to the alternative.
  • True for you and not for everyone — if your competitor could write the same line, it is not a differentiator.

3-5 such points cover the page. More dilutes the impact.

Section 4: Proof signals (the credibility wall)

This is the section that converts the "interested" visitor to the "calling" visitor. The pattern:

  • Numbers — years in business, customer count, transaction volume, satisfaction score (NPS, Google rating). Whatever is true and impressive.
  • Logos — clients you have served (with permission), industry associations you belong to (MIA, MDA, FIATA, MIID), certifications (ISO 9001, KKM, JKDM-licensed).
  • Press — media mentions, articles you have been quoted in.
  • Reviews — 2-3 named testimonials with full name and specific outcome.

Keep this section visual. Logos beat text. Numbers beat paragraphs.

Section 5: The closer (single CTA)

End the About page with a single clear next step. Often the same CTA as elsewhere on the site — WhatsApp, book a consultation, request a quote — but framed in the context of the visitor having just learned about you.

"Read this and want to talk? WhatsApp us, or book a 30-min discovery call below."

Not five CTAs. One. Pointed.

Three concrete examples

Example 1: Solo accountant in Petaling Jaya

About Bumi Accounting

Bumi Accounting handles statutory accounts and tax filing for Malaysian SMEs between RM 200,000 and RM 5M in annual revenue, with a specialty in F&B and small manufacturing. We have served 84 active clients since 2017, with a 96% client retention rate.

The founder

Tan Wei Ming — Founder, CTIM-registered, MIA member (No. 23456).

Wei Ming spent 9 years in Big-4 audit and 3 years as a financial controller for a Klang Valley F&B group before starting Bumi in 2017. The model came from a frustration: SMEs paid too much for audit-grade work when what they needed was responsive monthly accounting and tax planning. Bumi was designed around that gap.

"The thing we get told most often is: I never know what I am paying for at my old accountant. We try to make that impossible. Every engagement starts with a clear scope and a fixed fee."

Why Bumi specifically

  • Fixed-fee pricing. We publish ranges on the pricing page and quote a specific number before any work starts. No "miscellaneous adjustments" at year end.
  • F&B and manufacturing depth. Half our clients are restaurants, cafes, or small contract manufacturers. We know the SST treatment for food service, the inventory accounting for kitchens, the SSM filing nuances for partnership-to-Sdn-Bhd conversions.
  • Responsive monthly close. Management accounts in your inbox by the 10th working day of every month, every month. Most accountants deliver this quarterly, late.
  • Direct partner access. No junior staff handling your queries. Every client speaks to Wei Ming.

Proof

  • 84 active clients · 9 years in practice · 96% retention

  • CTIM-registered tax agent · MIA member · Xero Gold Partner

  • Featured in The Star Online (2024), MIA Accountants Today (2023)

  • 4.9/5 Google rating from 47 reviews

"Wei Ming saved us from a 6-figure SST mis-classification that our previous accountant had been making for 3 years. The investment paid for itself in the first quarter." — Sarah Tan, Director, Lumière Coffee Group

Example 2: Renovation contractor in Johor Bahru

About Studio Tropikal

Studio Tropikal designs and builds residential renovations between RM 100,000 and RM 600,000 for Johor homeowners — full design through construction, 8-month average timeline, with our lead architect on every project from brief to handover. We have completed 31 projects since 2020 across JB, Iskandar Puteri, and Skudai.

Adam Razak — Principal architect, LAM-registered (LAM No. 12345), 14 years in practice.

Adam worked at two Singapore architecture firms before returning to JB in 2020 to start Studio Tropikal. The studio runs a deliberately small portfolio — 5-7 active projects at a time — so Adam stays personally involved in every brief, every site walk, and every snagging session.

"Most renovation horror stories come from designers handing off to project managers handing off to contractors. We just don't do that. I sign off on every Material Take-Off and I am on site weekly. If a tiler installs the wrong colour, that is my problem, not the client's."

Why Studio Tropikal

  • Lead architect on every project. No junior PM running your renovation while Adam is on the next pitch.
  • In-house construction. We do not sub-contract the build — same team from design through handover.
  • Fixed-quote with itemised BoQ. No variation orders mid-build for things that should have been in the original scope.
  • JB-local team. Material sourcing through JB hardware merchants, faster response times than KL-based studios working in JB.

Proof

  • 31 completed projects since 2020

  • LAM-registered (No. 12345) · CIDB G3 contractor partner

  • Featured in Tatler Homes (2024), iProperty Magazine (2023)

"Studio Tropikal renovated our 4-bedroom home in Adda Heights over 9 months. We had three small kids living in the house through it. They managed dust, noise, and our nerves with equal care." — Marcus and Lily Choo

Example 3: Single-clinic dentist in Bandar Utama

About Smile Avenue Dental

Smile Avenue Dental is a single-clinic family dental practice in Bandar Utama, founded by Dr Tan Mei Ling in 2008. We focus on general dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, and orthodontics for adults and children. We have served roughly 4,200 patients across 17 years, with 60% of new patients coming from referrals.

[Photo of Dr Tan in the clinic]

Dr Tan Mei Ling — Principal dentist, BDS Universiti Malaya, MDC No. 12345, MDA member.

Dr Tan trained at Universiti Malaya (BDS, 2003) and worked at two KL clinics before opening Smile Avenue in Bandar Utama in 2008. The clinic is intentionally single-doctor — Dr Tan sees every patient personally, which means a small practice but consistent care across the years.

"Most dental clinic chains rotate dentists. Patients lose continuity, treatment plans get re-litigated. Here you see me on every visit. That is the whole model."

Why Smile Avenue

  • Same dentist every visit. Continuity is rare in Malaysian dental clinics; here it is the default.
  • Published prices. Our pricing page lists ranges for the 12 most common procedures. No surprises on the chair.
  • Same-week appointments. Most non-emergency consultations within 5 working days. Emergencies seen same-day where possible.
  • Bandar Utama-local. Free parking, easy access from Mutiara Damansara LRT.

Proof

  • 17 years in practice · 4,200+ patients

  • 4.8/5 Google rating from 312 reviews

  • KKM-registered private dental clinic · MDA member

"I've been a patient at Smile Avenue for 12 years. Dr Tan remembers my teeth better than I do." — Joanne Lim, Bandar Utama

What to remove from your current About page

Run your existing page against this checklist. Cut anything that:

  • Reads like a corporate brochure ("committed to excellence," "your trusted partner")
  • Lists more than 5 services (link them, don't list them here)
  • Has more than 3 paragraphs of founder career history
  • Has no photo of an actual human
  • Has no specific numbers (years, customers, projects)
  • Has more than one CTA at the end

If you cut everything that fails the test, the page often shrinks 70%. That is correct.
