How much should a small business website cost in Malaysia in 2026?
Real prices from real vendors. RM 0 to RM 50,000+, broken down by tier. The honest decision framework for where your money is best spent.

"How much should it cost?" is the first question every Malaysian SME owner asks when they think about a website. The honest answer is: it depends entirely on what you actually need — and most of you need less than you think.
This article maps the seven tiers I see in the Malaysian market in 2026, what each tier actually delivers, and the decision framework for picking the right one for your business.
"The SME Digitalisation Grant (Geran Digitalisasi PMKS) offers eligible Malaysian micro, small and medium enterprises a matching grant of up to RM 5,000 to subsidise digital transformation including website development, e-commerce solutions, and digital marketing." — Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), SME Digitalisation Grant Programme (mdec.my)
The seven tiers
| Tier | Total annual cost (MYR) | What you get | Right for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free / placeholder | RM 0-200 | Carrd, Google Sites, free Wix | Single-product weekend tests, MVP validation |
| DIY platform | RM 700-2,500 | Wix, Squarespace, Webflow personal | Solo founders with design taste + time |
| Managed-build SME | RM 399-1,200 (Wiz) / RM 2,400-6,000 (freelancer-built Squarespace) | Done-for-you premium template | Service businesses without internal design |
| Local agency basic | RM 3,500-8,000 setup + RM 100-300/month | 5-8 page custom WordPress | Small businesses wanting a "professional" agency |
| Local agency premium | RM 8,000-25,000 setup + RM 200-800/month | Custom design, deeper functionality | Established SMEs with strong brand needs |
| Specialised design studio | RM 25,000-80,000 | Custom-coded, brand-led, design-system | Premium brands, design-conscious sectors |
| Enterprise / corporate | RM 80,000-500,000+ | Multi-language, multi-region, deep integrations | Large companies, regulated industries |
Numbers reflect average prices across Klang Valley, Penang, JB and East Malaysia as of May 2026. Outliers exist in both directions.
Tier 1: Free / placeholder (RM 0-200)
What you get: A single-page Carrd site, a free Google Site, or a Wix free-plan site (with Wix branding plastered on every page).
Honest assessment: Fine for a weekend MVP. Not fine for a real business. The "Powered by Wix" footer signals one of two things to a visitor: either you are a side project, or you do not value your business enough to spend RM 50/month on it. Both kill the trust premium you need.
Time investment: 4-12 hours.
When this is right: You are testing whether anyone wants the thing at all. You will throw this site away in three months when you have validation.
When this is wrong: You are running a real, ongoing business and this is the public face of it.
Tier 2: DIY platform (RM 700-2,500/year)
What you get: Wix, Squarespace or Webflow under your own domain, no platform branding, decent SEO basics, your own design choices.
Honest assessment: This tier works when the owner enjoys design and writing. It fails when the owner is too busy to maintain it — which is most owners.
Time investment: 20-60 hours initial build + 2-4 hours/month upkeep.
Hidden costs to budget: USD 5-20/month for premium apps (forms, analytics, marketing tools); domain renewal RM 50-100/year; potential designer fees if you outsource specific pages (RM 300-1,500 per page).
When this is right: Solo founder, time-rich, design-curious, content-disciplined. You enjoy the website itself, not just the business behind it.
When this is wrong: You are time-poor or your design taste is not strong enough to make the templates work. Then RM 1,800/year buys you something that looks like every other Squarespace site.
Tier 3: Managed-build SME (RM 399-6,000/year)
This tier has two flavours:
Flavour A: Wiz Studio Labs (RM 399/year, all-in). You submit a brief, the site is built for you in 2-3 days, you get one round of edits, hosting + domain + SSL + invoicing are included. The model is built around removing 90% of the customer's time investment.
Flavour B: Freelancer-built Squarespace (RM 2,400-6,000/year). You hire a freelance designer (RM 2,000-4,000 one-off) to set up Squarespace for you, then pay Squarespace's subscription (RM 1,800-2,200/year) on top. Quality varies wildly by designer.
Honest assessment: This is the tier most Malaysian SMEs should be in. Premium design, fast turnaround, no DIY time, no agency lock-in.
Time investment: 1-3 hours (brief writing + reviews).
When this is right: You are a typical Malaysian SME — clinic, agency, accountant, contractor, retail, F&B — that wants a credible site without spending 40 hours on it.
When this is wrong: You need a fully custom design, deep integrations, or multi-page content publishing (in which case you graduate to Tier 4-5).
Tier 4: Local agency basic (RM 3,500-8,000 setup + RM 100-300/month)
What you get: A 5-8 page custom WordPress site, agency-designed, with basic SEO setup. Sometimes Webflow. Almost always with a maintenance retainer.
Honest assessment: This is the most over-sold tier in Malaysia. You are paying agency prices for what is, functionally, a managed-build SME website. The agency adds: WordPress (which you may not need), a maintenance retainer (which often does little), and the assurance of working with humans.
Time investment: 8-15 hours (briefing, revisions, content provision) over 4-8 weeks.
Hidden costs: Annual hosting if not bundled (RM 300-1,000); content updates priced per change (RM 100-500); SEO retainer often pitched separately at RM 1,000-3,000/month.
When this is right: You value the human relationship and want to be able to call someone for changes. You have a clear preference for working with a local agency over a SaaS-style service.
When this is wrong: You are paying for "premium" but getting an off-the-shelf WordPress theme with light customisation. Always ask: "show me 3 sites you've built for similar businesses." If they all look the same, you are buying the same template.
Tier 5: Local agency premium (RM 8,000-25,000 setup + RM 200-800/month)
What you get: Genuinely custom design, deeper integrations (CRM, booking, payment), multi-stage content strategy, sometimes a content team or copywriter.
Honest assessment: Real value at this tier — but the buyer needs to know what they are buying. Ask to see live sites that have been running 18+ months. Ask about the team size and whether the senior designer who pitched you is the one who will actually do the work.
Time investment: 20-40 hours (multiple briefings, content interviews, revisions) over 6-12 weeks.
When this is right: You have a strong brand position, a real budget, and a need for design that signals premium positioning. Examples: a high-end dental clinic chain, a boutique law firm, a hospitality brand, a Tier-1 manufacturer's marketing site.
When this is wrong: Anything else. Most SMEs do not need Tier 5 — they have been sold into it by an agency that pitched well.
Tier 6: Specialised design studio (RM 25,000-80,000)
What you get: Custom-coded site (often Next.js / React + headless CMS), a design system, brand strategy work, sometimes brand identity refresh bundled.
Honest assessment: The work is genuinely excellent at this tier. The price reflects creative direction and deep custom work, not just code. The question is whether the marginal design quality justifies the marginal spend for your specific business.
Time investment: 40-80 hours, 3-6 months timeline.
When this is right: Brand-led businesses where the website is the brand artefact. Architects, premium hospitality, luxury retail, design-led F&B, professional services targeting top-tier clients.
When this is wrong: SMEs whose customers will never appreciate the difference between a Tier 5 and Tier 6 site.
Tier 7: Enterprise / corporate (RM 80,000+)
What you get: Multi-language (English / BM / Mandarin / Tamil), multi-region, enterprise CMS, deep integrations into ERP / CRM / customer portals, multi-stage approval workflows, multi-year roadmap.
When this is right: Companies with 100+ employees, regulated industries, multi-product portfolios.
When this is wrong: Anyone smaller. If you are reading this and considering Tier 7 for a 20-person business, take that budget and split it — RM 8,000 for a Tier 4 site, RM 70,000 for ads and growth.
The framework
Pick your tier by asking three questions in order:
1. Do you have time and design taste?
- Yes → Tier 2 (DIY) — Squarespace or Wix
- No → keep going
2. Do you need anything beyond a credible, fast, mobile-correct 5-10 page site?
- No → Tier 3 (managed-build) — Wiz Studio Labs is the cheap end, Squarespace + freelancer is the comfortable middle
- Yes (custom integrations, content publishing, brand work) → keep going
3. How much does premium design signal matter for your business?
- Modestly → Tier 4 (agency basic), or honestly stay at Tier 3
- A lot → Tier 5 (agency premium)
- Existentially → Tier 6 (design studio)
The mistake most Malaysian SMEs make is paying for Tier 4 thinking they are getting Tier 5, or building Tier 1 thinking they are saving money when they are actually losing customers. Tier 3 — managed-build — is where the price-to-value ratio peaks for 80% of MY SMEs in 2026.
Where Wiz fits
Wiz Studio Labs is the cheap end of Tier 3 — RM 399/year. We can do this because the model removes all the variable cost: no client services overhead, no custom-everything, a tight set of 6 cinematic template families, AI-empowered production.
If you fit the typical Wiz customer profile (Malaysian SME, 1-50 employees, services / professional / retail / F&B, want premium design without 40 hours of your time), see our templates or start a brief.
If you are Tier 5+ — fully custom, design-led, multi-month — Wiz is not the right answer for you. We will say so if you ask.
The right answer is whichever tier matches your real needs. The wrong answer is the most expensive tier you can afford "just to be safe." That instinct has emptied a lot of MY SME marketing budgets.
● Common questions
Frequently asked questions
- How much does a small business website cost in Malaysia in 2026?
- Prices range from RM 0 (Carrd, Google Sites) to RM 500,000+ (enterprise). The mainstream tiers for a Malaysian SME are: RM 700-2,500/year for DIY platforms like Wix or Squarespace; RM 399-1,200/year for managed-build services like Wiz Studio Labs; RM 3,500-8,000 one-time plus RM 100-300/month for a local agency basic build; RM 8,000-25,000 plus RM 200-800/month for a local agency premium build.
- Is RM 399 per year actually enough for a real SME website?
- Yes, for service businesses without complex e-commerce or multi-language requirements. The Wiz Studio Labs RM 399/year plan includes: cinematic landing page built in 2-3 days, Vercel hosting, SSL, custom domain mapping, one revision round, MyInvois-compliant invoicing, mobile-responsive design, schema.org structured data, and a sticky WhatsApp CTA. It does not include unlimited revisions, custom backends, or copywriting from scratch.
- Can I claim the SME Digitalisation Grant for my website?
- Yes, eligible Malaysian micro, small and medium enterprises can claim a matching grant of up to RM 5,000 from MDEC (Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation) for website development, e-commerce solutions, and digital marketing services. The grant is matching, meaning you pay 50% and the grant covers 50%, up to the RM 5,000 cap. Vendors must be on the MDEC-approved list.
- Should I use WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, or a custom build?
- Decision rules: pick WordPress if you need full control, plugins, and have someone to maintain it. Pick Wix or Squarespace if you want DIY with templates and minimal technical work. Pick a managed-build service like Wiz Studio Labs if you want a cinematic-grade result without DIY effort. Pick a local agency if you have specific custom requirements above what platforms handle. Pick a custom build (Next.js, etc.) if you have engineering resources and need maximum performance.
- Why do agency websites cost RM 8,000 - RM 25,000+ in Malaysia?
- Local agency pricing typically reflects: 60-80 hours of designer+developer time, project management overhead, multiple revision cycles, custom WordPress or Webflow build, and ongoing maintenance retainers. The price reflects the labour model, not the technical complexity of the output. Modern AI-assisted build pipelines like Wiz Studio Labs collapse this model — same cinematic output, one operator, 48-hour turnaround, RM 399/year flat.
